What is Numerical Reasoning?
Numerical reasoning tests measure the ability to interpret tables, graphs and quantitative data accurately and quickly — one of the abilities that general mental ability research links to job performance across many roles.

What does Numerical Reasoning include?
- Real-world data tables, charts and financial scenarios, not abstract arithmetic
- Timed administration under exam-like conditions with proctoring support
- Percentile scoring against the platform's reference norm table
- Relevant to finance, analytics, operations and general professional roles
- Combinable with Verbal and Abstract Reasoning into a full Cognitive Ability Battery
Why does it matter?
Numerical reasoning is a core component of general mental ability (GMA), for which Schmidt & Hunter's (1998) review of personnel selection research reported a corrected validity of about .51 with job performance, among the strongest single predictors in that review and above unstructured interviews (about .38). That is research on general mental ability as a whole, not a validity study of this test, whose own evidence has not yet been published. Résumé screening alone relies on credentials that vary widely between institutions.
Who is Numerical Reasoning for?
How does Numerical Reasoning work?
- 1
Candidate completes timed numerical items under proctored conditions
- 2
AXIS360 scores accuracy and percentile rank against the norm group
- 3
Report shows raw score, percentile, and pass/fail against your set threshold

Frequently asked questions
Is a calculator allowed?
This is configurable per assessment — some roles test mental estimation, others allow calculators to test data interpretation specifically.
What does the research say about numerical reasoning and job performance?
Research on general mental ability (Schmidt & Hunter, 1998) reported a corrected validity of about .51 with job performance across many occupations. That finding concerns general mental ability tests as a group; it is not a validity study of this particular test.
